Sugar in Food for babies

When preparing meals for babies and toddlers it’s really important to avoid adding unnecessary sugar into foods.  Kids just don’t need the extra refined sugar that has become so prevalent in our society and the best way to avoid added sugars is to prepare your own fresh ingredients, that way you know exactly what’s going in.  But unless you fully embrace a wholefoods or raw approach to eating, it is hard to completely avoid sugar so don’t be too tough on yourself. Whilst sugars do play a role in our diet, the reason for avoiding them initially is that our …

Are you dealing with a fussy eater?

I think we all want to do the right thing by our children and perhaps the best thing we can do for them is help them develop a positive relationship with food. Research shows that the more tastes of different foods a baby has in their first 12 months, the wider the variety of foods they will go on to enjoy into childhood. A hugely important tool in combating the rise of Type 2 Diabetes. My mantra is ‘Cook Often, Cook Fresh and Cook Varied’. And of course be patient. Do this and you will be surprised at how well …

Feeding Baby, A humbling experience

It can be easy to forget just how challenging feeding babies can be.  They can be very wilful at times and really like to test the boundaries. If you wish for calm and happy mealtimes where your child sits calmly in their highchair or at the table and gets on with the job of eating, then it’s important to set some basic parameters from the outset; always remember who is boss (you, not them!) and keep clear and consistent boundaries around mealtimes. May is Hands Up for Miracles Month!

May is Hands Up for Miracles Month which is especially close to my heart.  Not only am I an active supporter of the Miracle Babies Foundation but my gorgeous twins were born 8 weeks premature, in May! Miracle Babies were a great support to me and my family whilst we spent 7 weeks in Special Care. The twins turned 6 the other day, started school earlier this year and are thriving.  I marvel every day to look at them and how they have grown into the most lovely and divine children, full of smarts and wonder.  Sorry, think I’m being …

Allergy Testing – Eggs

Current research suggests that we should be exposing our babies to eggs and nuts much earlier than was previously advised. The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute has carried out the world’s biggest paediatric study of food allergy, HealthNuts, involving 5300 babies and toddlers. Based on its findings, it is now advising parents to “introduce a wide range of foods early on”.  “We believe that late introduction of egg does not reduce the risk of developing an egg allergy”. It also suggests that introduction of cooked egg between 4 to 6 months is safe and may even be protective against egg allergy …

Feeding babies and kids – fun or frightening?

Welcome to our fabulous new feeding guide! Oh how I wish I had this wonderful feeding guide when my children were born. Feeding my children has been a constant challenge since they were babies, my son has never been interested in feeding, he didn’t take to the breast or bottle, and had no interest in food, even still to this day (unless it’s in the form of a choc chip biscuit or icy pole!). My daughter on the other hand is a mad feeder, loved the boob, tries all kinds of food and eats with gusto, our challenge is picking …
