Sugar in Food for babies

When preparing meals for babies and toddlers it’s really important to avoid adding unnecessary sugar into foods.  Kids just don’t need the extra refined sugar that has become so prevalent in our society and the best way to avoid added sugars is to prepare your own fresh ingredients, that way you know exactly what’s going in.  But unless you fully embrace a wholefoods or raw approach to eating, it is hard to completely avoid sugar so don’t be too tough on yourself. Whilst sugars do play a role in our diet, the reason for avoiding them initially is that our …

Is some A2 protein the same as all A2 protein in dairy milk? Are you confused?

Drink more milk, eat more yoghurt and enjoy more cheese! We all know dairy milk is one of the richest food sources of calcium and also provides many other important nutrients…but it seems we become totally confused when it comes to the proteins in milk.  There’s been a lot of noise lately especially about the A2 protein.  Here, we unravel the story of A2 protein and why so many people are talking about a2 Milk. Firstly, all regular dairy milk brands today contain a combination of two main types of beta-casein protein, A1 and A2.  a2 Milk is special because …

Are you dealing with a fussy eater?

I think we all want to do the right thing by our children and perhaps the best thing we can do for them is help them develop a positive relationship with food. Research shows that the more tastes of different foods a baby has in their first 12 months, the wider the variety of foods they will go on to enjoy into childhood. A hugely important tool in combating the rise of Type 2 Diabetes. My mantra is ‘Cook Often, Cook Fresh and Cook Varied’. And of course be patient. Do this and you will be surprised at how well …

Feeding Baby, A humbling experience

It can be easy to forget just how challenging feeding babies can be.  They can be very wilful at times and really like to test the boundaries. If you wish for calm and happy mealtimes where your child sits calmly in their highchair or at the table and gets on with the job of eating, then it’s important to set some basic parameters from the outset; always remember who is boss (you, not them!) and keep clear and consistent boundaries around mealtimes. Photo credit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/11893522@N00/2907617306/ Let me share a little story with you… I have 3 kids, twins who were …

May is Hands Up for Miracles Month!

May is Hands Up for Miracles Month which is especially close to my heart.  Not only am I an active supporter of the Miracle Babies Foundation but my gorgeous twins were born 8 weeks premature, in May! Miracle Babies were a great support to me and my family whilst we spent 7 weeks in Special Care. The twins turned 6 the other day, started school earlier this year and are thriving.  I marvel every day to look at them and how they have grown into the most lovely and divine children, full of smarts and wonder.  Sorry, think I’m being …

What to feed teething babies and toddlers…

Arrggghhh!  Teething! Teething for babies and toddlers can be so painful, and it seems to go on, and on, and on. Teething was our favourite go-to diagnosis for any poor behavior or change in temperament. The crankiness, dribbling and disturbed sleep can really put a spanner in things and seems to always happen just after you’ve broken a new regime in and calm had just been restored. There is not much for it though, lots of love and cuddles, soothing gels and plenty of dribble-bibs on the ready.  Some swear by the Amber necklaces and others just love the silicone …

Power Biccies

With my twins just starting Prep I’ve been thinking a lot about lunch boxes. And what to put in them…. every day for, 5 days a week….. it’s a daunting thought. I’m determined not to undo my 5 years of hard work and resort to copious amounts of pre-packaged sugar laden snack foods to fill the lunch box.  I also don’t want to expose my now 2 year old to that type of food on a regular basis.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a junk food nazi, my kids have treats most day, but they are usually home-baked and …

CHRISTMAS REINDEERS

It’s an emotional time at my place.  Kinder graduation for my twins…I can hardly believe it. I got to wondering about a lovely little gift for all our Kindy friends and very quickly dismissed Candy Canes as I cant bear them, but still wondered what…..?  I remembered these totally gorgeous little Reindeers I’d seen my neighbor make a few years ago and together the Kids and I set about making them.  So cute and really deliciousstrange but true! They make a great Christmas gift for friends and family and would make a great end to any festive feast. See Recipe …

Christmas Couscous

This is a recipe I created last year but every time I make it I feel a bit Christmassy.  Don’t you think it looks a bit like Christmas? I just love the colours and so do the kids.  It’s super simple to cook and is delicious both hot or cold which I find makes it a great option for taking to parks and Christmtas parties, where invariably the bubs of this world are not catered for.  A small tub of this in your bag and its chowtime anywhere. Ingredients 1 TBS olive oil 1 asian shallot, finely diced 1 clove …

Tuna steaks with Mango and Avocado Salsa

Melbourne’s weather is completely crazy at the moment.  34 degrees one day and 14 the next!  I was just getting excited about the warmer weather and here I am back in my puffer jacket wishing I had the heater on. But, in the tiny 1 day taste of summer we did have I managed to summon some summer flavours, fire up the BBQ and create a winner that was loved but all – from 2 to 42 (not quite but it rhymes!). When I first thought about it as a dinner option I initially dismissed it as not something that …
